What’s the deal with K9s and K8s? (CO vs B, 3b calling range, 200bb)
Main Post: What’s the deal with K9s and K8s? (CO vs B, 3b calling range, 200bb)
Top Comment: 1st I believe this is some simplified preflop strategy. It’s probably not good to follow it through 100%, there’s some spots where you want to have them in your range. Basically against tough GTO opponents, CO generally have a tight opening range, button knows you as CO has tight opening range and will 3 bet you with a range that’s on avg stronger than CO opening range. CO can employ this thing called minimum defense frequency - fold a bit of its weaker openings but defend with a good majority. The theory for that is simple - button voluntarily put in money on this board so he’s taking the risk to win a smaller reward: you as CO don’t want button to be auto profitable with his risk, so you should defend, but you can fold a small proportion up to the point where button is not auto profitable with his 3 bets. And why you want to fold some - obviously bc button should have a stronger range on avg and has position on us. So what to keep and what to fold? Well solvers obviously prefer Ax hands over Kx hands, so it defends with most of its Axs, and will choose some of its Kxs hands to give up on. Among the Kxs - the broadway ones are good for straight potential and high pairs, so it keeps. The K2s/K3s is too raggy so it gives up on those a lot of the time. So why does it prefer K7s over K9s - I believe it has to do with being dominated. A9s and 99 is more likely to be in buttons 3 betting ranger than A7s and 77.

Played at Monarch and Ameristar over the weekend. Much bigger fan of the cash games at Ameristar. Splashy, fast-playing match the stack degen fun. Photo is from their 1-3 game I jumped in early AM that ran through the night. Shout out to the CO poker scene overall - truly fun locals!
Top Comment: I used to play for a living in Blackhawk. Monarch is the nuts. There’s always a good game in the room at every stake
